... Flood safety awareness week begins Monday...

The third annual flood safety awareness week begins next
Monday... March 15th. The National Weather Service /NWS/ is hosting
flood safety awareness week to raise public awareness of the dangers
of flooding... and provide you ways to protect life and property. On
an average annual basis in the United States... floods kill nearly
100 people and are responsible for damages of about 5.3 billion
dollars.

With threats from landfalling tropical cyclones... stalled frontal
boundaries... summertime thunderstorms... and more... flooding is a
threat in the Tennessee Valley during every month... at any time of
the day or night... and in virtually any location.

During each day of flood safety awareness week... a different topic
will be covered pertaining to flood safety.

Monday March 15th... the focus will be on the NWS advanced hydrologic
prediction service /ahps/. This program is the result of an ongoing
effort by the NWS to make hydrologic forecasts and information more
accessible to the public we serve. In the Tennessee Valley... 18
sites are now displayed on our local ahps webpage. Four of these
sites have the full suite of ahps services... which include
probabilistic long-range forecasts as well as the deterministic
short-range forecasts that have always been provided.

Tuesday March 16th... we will discuss the turn around... don't drown
/tadd/ program. This vital safety program is designed to remind
drivers of the dangers of flooding. Strategically-placed Road signs
are being launched nationwide.

Wednesday March 17th... we will discuss two very different phenomena.
First... the threat of flooding caused by a landfalling tropical
cyclone. As the storm moves inland and weakens... the wind may
diminish but the heavy rain does not end. In fact... sometimes the
heaviest rain occurs after the system has moved inland. We will
discuss that threat and tell you what to watch out for. We will also
look at drought... an impact currently not occurring in the region.

Thursday March 18th... on Thursday we will turn from the threats to
ways you can protect yourself. Flood insurance is one of the best
ways for those in flood-prone areas to protect themselves from flood
damage. Your regular homeowners policy typically does not cover
flood damage. On Thursday... find out how to determine your flood
risk and how to choose flood insurance that is best for you.

Friday March 19th... we will end the week with some general flood
safety tips. Knowing what to do before... during... and after a flood
can save lives and reduce injuries and property damage.
